Standard Poodles are famous for their brilliant appearance and amiable personality. These dogs are very intelligent and learn tricks quickly. The Standard Poodle is one of the three varieties of the breed. Standard Poodles gave start to the Miniature and the Toy Poodle. These breeds have similar characteristics, yet appear to be smaller in size.

The Standard Poodle serves mainly as a companion. The dog is a favorite of the family and the whole neighborhood. The Standard Poodle has a wiry curly coat that adds to the beauty of the dog. These dogs come in all solid colors, which is appreciated by dog lovers. One can easily find a pet to his/her taste.
Standard Poodles are medium-sized dogs. The difference between sexes is slight. Standard Poodles stand about 15 inches at the shoulder and more. The average weight is about 45-70 pounds.
The Standard Poodle has a long head and muzzle. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. The long ears hang close to the head. Almond-shaped eyes are usually dark. It is recommended to dock the tail to half of the original size.
Standard Poodles - Living Conditions
Standard Poodles do not need a lot of space. These dogs are relatively inactive indoors and do not need a lot of exercise. Their exercise needs can be met with a few walks a day.
Retrieving game from water was the Standard Poodle's original function. These dogs have retained their liking for water and seem to enjoy water activities absolutely. Breeders and owners of the Standard Poodle claim that the breed is happiest with regular exercise in a safe area.

The Standard Poodle lives for 12-15 years and longer. However, the breed is prone to a number of hereditary disorders. Thus, the Standard Poodle often suffers from allergies and other skin diseases. A great number of skin problems are probably due to inadequate upkeep. Since not all owners can properly handle grooming the Poodle, there occurs a lot of skin injuries and allergies.
Standard Poodles are also susceptible to PRA and hip dysplasia. It is recommended to test the breeding stock for these conditions. Eye conditions can lead to blindness. Therefore, any eye disorders should make the owner feel alarmed and want to give the dog a veterinarian check. It should also be kept in mind that Standard Poodles can suffer from bloat.
